Poljot is a Russian watch brand that has a long and interesting history. The brand was established in 1961, and its name is derived from the Russian word "poliot," which means "flight."
The history of Poljot watches is closely tied to the Soviet space program. In the 1960s, the brand produced the first watch worn in space by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. The watch, called the Strela (meaning "arrow" in Russian), was worn by Gagarin during his historic flight into space in 1961.
Poljot continued to produce watches for the Soviet space program, including the legendary Poljot Chronograph "Sturmanskie," which was worn by cosmonauts during the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. The watch was also used by the Soviet military and was popular with pilots.
In addition to its space and aviation watches, Poljot produced a range of other timepieces, including dress watches, dive watches, and military-style watches. Many of these watches featured mechanical movements made in-house by Poljot, which were known for their reliability and accuracy.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Poljot struggled to compete in the new market economy. The brand was eventually sold to a private company, and production was moved to Switzerland. Today, the Poljot brand is no longer in production, but vintage Poljot watches remain popular among collectors and enthusiasts.
