Eterna is a Swiss watch brand that was founded in Grenchen, Switzerland in 1856. The company was initially called Dr. Girard & Schild, named after the founders, Josef Girard and Urs Schild. The brand quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality and reliable timepieces. In 1948, Eterna introduced a revolutionary innovation in watchmaking - the Eterna-Matic automatic movement. The Eterna-Matic movement featured a ball-bearing rotor system, which improved accuracy and reliability, and became an industry standard for automatic watches. In the 1960s, Eterna became a leader in the development of diving watches. The company introduced the KonTiki line of watches, named after the famous explorer Thor Heyerdahl's raft expedition across the Pacific Ocean. The KonTiki watches were highly durable, water-resistant, and featured innovative features, such as shock resistance. Throughout the years, Eterna continued to innovate and produce high-quality watches. In 2011, the brand introduced the revolutionary Spherodrive movement, which uses a series of ball bearings to transmit power from the mainspring to the gear train.
