Geometric Stainless-Steel Case and Octagonal Design

The defining feature of Ref. 4817-4 is its strongly architectural case. Broad brushed stainless-steel surfaces form an angular outer profile, while the raised polished bezel follows the same multi-sided geometry around the crystal. Rather than treating the unusual shape as a decorative detail, Longines carried the design through the complete face of the watch, producing a coherent geometric composition from case edge to dial.

At 33 mm across and approximately 38 mm lug to lug, the watch remains compact by modern standards, but the broad case shoulders and large visual footprint make it appear considerably more substantial than the diameter suggests. The 20 mm strap width is particularly generous relative to the case size and further strengthens its proportions. Silver Dial with Roman Numerals and Framed Date Display

The silver dial mirrors the case with an inner multi-sided minute track that creates a second geometric frame inside the bezel. Applied Roman numerals mark XII, III, VI and IX, while the Longines name and winged hourglass emblem occupy the upper half of the dial. The AUTOMATIC signature is positioned below the center, leaving the unusual architecture of the dial largely uncluttered.

A framed date aperture is integrated into the lower-right portion of the dial, while slim hands and a central sweep seconds hand maintain the restrained 1970s aesthetic. The dial shows visible age-related spotting and surface patina, particularly when viewed closely under strong light. These marks are part of the actual vintage condition of this example and are visible in the photographs rather than concealed behind a generalized condition description. The applied numerals, signatures, minute track and date window nevertheless remain clearly defined.

Inside is Longines Cal. L633.1, an automatic mechanical movement with central seconds and date indication. In this watch the movement has been completely serviced and is currently measuring approximately +2 seconds per day under our test conditions. That figure records its present observed performance rather than guaranteeing the same daily rate under every wearing condition, but it provides considerably more useful information about the current mechanical state than a simple statement that the watch is running.
