Yellow-Orange Pogue Dial with Red and Blue Tachymeter Bezel

The dial is the immediate focal point of this 6139-6002. Its warm yellow-orange surface is framed by a white internal timing scale and the distinctive external red-and-blue tachymeter bezel, creating the high-contrast combination most closely associated with the “Pogue” configuration. Applied rectangular hour markers carry aged luminous material, while broad luminous-filled hour and minute hands remain highly visible against the dial. A red-brown central chronograph seconds hand and matching 30-minute recorder hand provide further contrast without overwhelming the layout.

The single chronograph register at 6 o’clock keeps the display visually balanced, while the framed day-date window at 3 o’clock gives the watch the characteristic asymmetry of the 6139 family. The dial shows natural vintage aging, and the tachymeter bezel carries visible wear, fading and surface loss from decades of use. Those signs of age sit naturally against the strongly preserved case geometry and make the watch read immediately as an authentic 1970s sports chronograph rather than a modern recreation.

Seiko 6139-6002 and the Pogue Space-Flight Connection

The 6139-600x family became permanently associated with NASA astronaut Colonel William R. Pogue, who privately purchased a Seiko 6139 and used it during training before taking it aboard the Skylab 4 mission in 1973. The watch was worn in space alongside his officially issued Omega Speedmaster, giving the Seiko 6139 family an unusual place in early automatic-chronograph history. The yellow-dial configuration subsequently became widely known among collectors as the “Pogue.”

This example was produced in 1977, placing it in the mature production period of the 6139 series. Its combination of the warm dial, red-and-blue bezel, recessed crown, chronograph pushers and broad cushion-shaped stainless-steel case creates the unmistakable sporting profile that made these watches one of the defining Seiko chronograph designs of the 1970s.

Cal. 6139 Automatic Chronograph with Column Wheel and Vertical Clutch

Inside is Seiko Cal. 6139, one of the pioneering automatic chronograph movements introduced at the end of the 1960s. Its chronograph system combines a column wheel with a vertical clutch, allowing the central chronograph seconds hand to engage cleanly while maintaining precise control of the start, stop and reset functions. The movement operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and includes a 30-minute chronograph recorder together with day and date displays.

The 6139 is automatic-only rather than manually wound, and its calendar can be advanced through the recessed crown by pressing it to different depths for the date and day. This watch is currently in service and is fully operational, with an observed running rate of approximately +2 seconds per day under present test conditions. That figure represents its current measured performance rather than a permanent accuracy guarantee. A 12-month movement warranty is supplied with the watch.

41 mm Cushion Case and Original Full-Length Seiko Bracelet

The stainless-steel case measures approximately 41 mm across and 46 mm lug to lug, giving the watch substantial wrist presence even by contemporary standards. Broad brushed upper surfaces, sharply angled shoulders and the wide bezel make the case appear larger than its measurements alone suggest, while the 19 mm bracelet connection integrates closely into the case profile. The chronograph pushers project clearly from the case side, reinforcing the functional character of the design.

An important detail on this example is the original full-length Seiko stainless-steel bracelet, complete with its signed Seiko clasp. Many surviving 6139 chronographs are now found on replacement bracelets or straps, so retaining the correct period bracelet preserves both the intended proportions and the visual continuity of the original design.
