Angular Square Seamaster Case with Strong 1970s Presence

Ref. 166.042 moves well away from the conventional round Seamaster profile. Its stainless-steel case uses a wide geometric outline, sharply cut corners and substantial brushed surfaces around a large square dial opening. Although the diameter is only 34 mm, the 41 mm lug-to-lug measurement and broad case shape give it noticeably more wrist presence than a typical round watch of the same nominal size.

The design belongs to the period when Swiss manufacturers were experimenting with increasingly architectural case forms and more sophisticated water-resistant constructions. This reference is associated with the broader Compressor-style design language of the era, but that historical context should not be taken as a claim of present-day water resistance. The caseback carries the Seamaster hippocampus medallion, while the crown is signed with the Omega symbol. The crisp geometry makes this one of the more visually unusual watches within the vintage Omega collection.

Textured Grey Dial with Graphic White Hour Blocks

The grey dial combines fine radial texture with broad white segmented hour blocks positioned around the perimeter. Applied silver-tone baton markers sit over this printed structure, producing visible depth and a highly graphic appearance. The applied Omega emblem and OMEGA AUTOMATIC signature occupy the upper half of the dial, with the Seamaster script set lower down.

A framed date aperture at 3 o’clock is balanced by dark hour and minute hands and a long orange-red central seconds hand that provides the strongest color accent on the watch. The dial shows visible age-related spotting and patina, particularly around the central and right-hand areas, while the main printed geometry, applied indexes and signatures remain clear. The combination of muted grey, bright white blocks and the warm seconds hand gives this example a distinctive period character without relying on decorative complexity.

Omega Cal. 565 Automatic with Quick-Set Date

Inside is Omega Cal. 565, a 24-jewel automatic movement with quick-set date adjustment. The quick-set mechanism makes calendar correction considerably easier than on many earlier vintage movements, while the automatic winding system keeps the watch mechanically convenient for regular wear. Cal. 565 is one of Omega’s established vintage automatic calibers and provides a conventional mechanical foundation beneath the much less conventional square case.

The movement has been fully serviced and is currently running at approximately -12 seconds per day under present test conditions. That figure represents the watch’s current measured performance rather than a permanent accuracy guarantee. A 12-month movement warranty is included. Original Omega Details with a New Black Leather Strap

The watch retains its original watch components, while the fitted black leather strap is a new replacement. The original Omega buckle has been retained and is fitted to the new strap, preserving an important signed detail without presenting the leather as period-original. The signed crown and hippocampus caseback further reinforce the recognisable Seamaster identity of the watch.

The stainless-steel case shows normal light evidence of vintage use but retains strong brushed surfaces and well-defined angular facets. Combined with the aged grey dial, orange seconds hand and compact square proportions, this example has a distinctly architectural appearance that separates it from the round Seamaster designs more commonly associated with the period.
