Richard Bumper, Ref. 19NA, Men’s Automatic Vintage Watch

The Richard Bumper, reference 19NA, brings a two-tone beige dial and an early self-winding movement into a compact 33 mm steel case. The champagne-coloured centre is bordered by a slightly darker outer ring, with applied Arabic numerals and teardrop indices. Red “Automatic” lettering adds a separate accent to this dress watch from the 1950s.

Two-tone dial and shaped indices

Applied Arabic numerals appear at 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10, with teardrop indices at the remaining positions. A clean minute track outlines the two-tone display. The red Automatic script and “17 JEWELS” inscription give the otherwise restrained face distinct printed details.

The original dial shows natural ageing. Polished dauphine hour and minute hands cross the light centre, accompanied by a slim central seconds hand. The darker outer ring brings the hour furniture into its own visual band.

Compact polished steel case

The stainless steel case has a polished finish and slim lugs. Its 33 mm diameter gives the dress watch a small head by modern expectations, with the narrow lug outlines keeping the proportions restrained. Signs of wear remain on the case.

At 3, the crown is small, unsigned and ridged, providing access for winding and time setting. A modern black leather strap is fitted. It is a replacement, distinct from the watch's original components, and supplies a darker attachment around the two-tone dial.

Bumper automatic operation

The automatic watch uses a 17-jewel bumper movement. Its oscillating weight moves through a limited arc and meets springs, rather than rotating freely through a full circle. That bounded motion is the distinguishing principle of this early self-winding design.

Richard's use of bumper movements belonged to the development of accessible automatic Swiss watches during the 1950s, before full-rotor designs became widespread. Here that mechanical construction sits within a small polished case and a clearly divided two-tone face.
