Dugena Tropica, Ref. A5905/518, Cal. ETA 2789, Men’s Automatic

The 1976 Dugena Tropica Ref. A5905/518 combines a black sunburst day-date dial with a broad tonneau-style case and its original integrated steel bracelet. Brushed surfaces and polished facets give the 38 mm case a geometric profile. Swiss ETA Cal. 2789 provides automatic winding, while the dial carries the Tropica, 25 JEWELS and INCABLOC markings.

Black Sunburst Dial and Framed Day-Date

The dial shifts from black to charcoal as the light moves over its radial finish. Applied silver-tone rectangular markers have pale central inserts, with a fine printed minute track and small luminous-style plots at several hour positions. DUGENA and its emblem sit above the hands; TROPICA AUTOMATIC, 25 JEWELS and INCABLOC occupy the lower half. T SWISS MADE T is printed at the outer edge.

A large framed aperture at 3 o’clock shows the weekday and numerical date side by side. Broad hour and minute hands have pale inserts matching the markers, while a slim central seconds hand reaches toward the minute scale. Visible aging remains on the luminous-style inserts, although the dial is clearly legible.

Brushed Tonneau Case and Integrated Bracelet

The stainless-steel case measures 38 mm across and 43 mm lug to lug. A brushed top contrasts with polished side facets around the round dial opening. Broad shoulders and short bracelet transitions emphasize the case geometry. Normal surface marks remain visible, while the brushed grain is clearly defined.

A ridged crown at 3 o’clock provides a grip for time and calendar adjustment. Its scale suits the broad case, and no clearly legible crown signature is visible.

The original integrated Dugena stainless-steel bracelet combines broad outer links with narrower articulated center elements. It continues the case’s angular silhouette and retains light wear from use. The fit is adjustable; an exact fitted wrist circumference is not supplied.

ETA 2789 and Tropica’s Practical Design

The Swiss ETA 2789 automatic movement powers the central time display and day-date calendar. It has 25 jewels, operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and incorporates Incabloc shock protection. The movement’s Swiss identity is distinct from Dugena’s German brand background.

The Tropica name belongs to a Dugena line intended for active use. This example expresses that direction through its broad steel case, integrated bracelet and practical calendar display, rather than the slim proportions of a formal dress watch.
