Early Seiko AGS Technology Before the Kinetic Name

The most important feature of this watch is hidden beneath its conventional three-hand appearance. Seiko’s Automatic Generating System, or AGS, uses an oscillating rotor driven by wrist movement to generate electrical energy, which is then stored and used to power an electronically regulated quartz movement. It is therefore fundamentally different from both a conventional battery-powered quartz watch and a mechanical automatic, combining automatic energy generation with quartz time regulation.

Cal. 5M22 belongs to the formative period of this technology before Seiko adopted the better-known Kinetic name. The movement uses a 32,768 Hz quartz regulator and provides a date display at 3 o’clock. Ref. 5M22-8A10 has no external power-reserve indicator button, leaving the case unusually clean for an early self-generating Seiko. This technical background gives the watch particular interest within the broader history of vintage Seiko watches, where mechanical, quartz and hybrid technologies often overlapped during periods of rapid development.

Deep Blue Dial with Gold-Tone 1990s Detailing

The dark blue dial has a smooth, subtly reflective finish that shifts in intensity under changing light. Slim applied baton indexes and a fine gold-tone minute track create a precise, uncluttered layout, while the framed date aperture at 3 o’clock is outlined in matching gold tone. The SEIKO signature sits prominently beneath 12, with AUTOMATIC GENERATING SYSTEM printed above 6 o’clock to identify the technology inside.

The narrow faceted hands continue the restrained two-tone theme, and the absence of additional complications keeps the dial unusually clean. Against the dark blue background, the gold-colored printing and bezel add warmth without overpowering the steel elements of the case and bracelet. The dial appears especially well preserved, with crisp printing, clean applied markers and very little visible age-related deterioration.

36 mm Two-Tone Case with Integrated Original Seiko Bracelet

The 36 mm case is compact by modern standards but broad through the shoulders, with a 41 mm lug-to-lug measurement and integrated bracelet design that gives the watch noticeably more wrist presence than a conventional round 36 mm dress watch. Brushed stainless-steel surfaces dominate the case, while a gold-plated bezel and matching crown provide strong contrast around the dark blue dial.

The original Seiko bracelet, Ref. Z1684.I, continues the same two-tone construction with steel outer sections and gold-tone central links. Its broad, integrated first links make the bracelet an important part of the overall design rather than a separate accessory. The case, bezel and bracelet show light evidence of normal vintage use, but the plated surfaces remain particularly well preserved for a watch of this age, with the original contrast between steel and gold tone still clearly defined.

A 1992 Seiko from the Formative Self-Powered Quartz Era

Produced in August 1992, this Ref. 5M22-8A10 comes from an early stage in Seiko’s development of self-powered electronic wristwatches. The watch combines visual cues that are unmistakably early 1990s — dark blue dial, two-tone construction and integrated bracelet proportions — with technology that would later become a major part of Seiko’s Kinetic identity.

Its strongest quality as a surviving example is completeness: the case, dial, crown and original bracelet remain together in their intended factory configuration, while the watch is fully operational. For collectors interested in the period between conventional quartz and later self-powered electronic watches, it offers a distinctly different branch of Seiko engineering from the mechanical watches that dominate most vintage collections.
